Aakash Chopra urges ICC to relocate matches scheduled in Florida

Former Indian batter Aakash Chopra has questioned the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision to host the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 games in Florida. He argued that the venue should be changed, not to favor any particular team, but primarily to better accommodate the fans.

In flood-ravaged Lauderhill, Florida, Pakistan and the United States Of America will face off against Ireland. A no-result in either match would eliminate Ireland and Pakistan from the ICC T20 World Cup.

Chopra suggested that the Florida weather may be unsuitable for cricket matches and that the games should be relocated, not solely to prioritize Pakistan.

“I will begin by addressing a somewhat complex issue. While there are compelling arguments in favor of this approach, it will not be explored in depth. The fixtures scheduled in Florida may be canceled entirely due to severe weather conditions. Flash floods have submerged cars and resulted in loss of life and property damage. Matches previously scheduled to take place there have also been affected,” stated Chopra.

“I’m not suggesting the matches were postponed because they anticipated rain. However, the reality is it’s not just raining, but a full-blown storm. The chances of the matches taking place are extremely low. This has nothing to do with what may happen with Pakistan or the USA – it’s simply not a decision made to favor Pakistan,” he continued.

Chopra suggested that the Florida games may be moved to Dallas, even though he acknowledged that New York could not be an adequate location.

“Given the inclement weather conditions in Florida, it seems prudent to explore relocating these matches to a more suitable venue. Dallas, with its dry climate and well-maintained grounds, could be an ideal alternative location.

“However, the decision to dismantle the New York grounds, despite the known poor conditions in Florida, is puzzling. While the makeshift nature and rules of the New York grounds may have presented logistical challenges, Dallas’s status as an established cricket stadium makes it a more viable option to host these matches,” he further added.

The Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill Florida will host three Group A fixtures; USA vs Ireland, India vs Canada and Pakistan vs Ireland.
