India’s decision to open the innings with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli has backfired in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Virat has failed miserably with just 5 runs from three matches, while Rohit has amassed just 1 fifty. Their failures have impacted the other batters as the Men in Blue didn’t post a big total against Pakistan, while the chase against Ireland and the United States of America was not easy.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has given an important suggestion to the sub-continent team for Super 8 games. He wants India to stop opening with either Rohit or Virat and include Yashasvi Jaiswal as an opener in the playing XI.
Jaiswal, who is an aggressive batter, hasn’t featured in the first three games of the tournament. The fourth contest of Team India against Canada was abandoned due to rain.
“I love Yashasvi Jaiswal and I want him to open the batting for India,” he said on Cricbuzz.
“I am not bothered about Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma moving to No.3. Shivam Dube is at No.5 but I want Rishabh Pant in that place,” he added.
Jaiswal has accumulated 502 runs as an opener in T20Is in 17 matches at a strike rate of 161.93 and an average of 33.46 with one century and four fifties.
“Yashasvi is a good batter and I would want him in the team,” he continued.
Vaughan said that India made the right decision by including enough left-handers in their playing XI.
“India have done a good job by keeping a few left-handers in the team. Earlier, they made a mistake by not going in with the left-hand batters,” he concluded.
