Pakistan can come close to becoming world beaters if Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie are given freedom: Michael Vaughan

Pakistan have hit the rock bottom once again in international cricket.

After their dismal performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, a lot was expected to change quickly but apart from departure of coching staff and captaincy change, the core group was not touched.

However, the arrival of the new PCB chairman brought back Babar Azam as a captain in white-ball formats. The outcome remain the same in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The Men in Green once again failed to cross the first hurdle and were eliminated from the group stage after losing to the United States of America and India.

Mohsin Raza Naqvi, the head of the PCB, has promised a big surgery after the T20 World Cup. However, he is likely to keep Babar as a skipper, considering it was his decision to reappoint Azam.

Gary Kirsten is Pakistan’s coach in shorter formats, while Jason Gillespie has the responsibility in Test cricket. Former England captain Michael Vaughan wants Pakistan to continue with the two legendary cricketers to become a world class team.

“Jason Gillespie and Gary Kirsten are good coaches but they need freedom to take decisions independently.

They should be allowed to select and remove players. Pakistan cricket is all about chairman of PCB but he should be the last person to interfere in the functioning of the team.

“If Gary and Jason are given a free hand, Pakistan can come close to becoming world beaters. There is enough talent in Pakistan,” Michael Vaughan said.
