Delhi: Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir may become the new head coach of Team India. Rahul Dravid's tenure as head coach will end after the current ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Dravid refused to continue in the post despite captain Rohit Sharma's request and, therefore, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) advertised for a new head coach. Many names were discussed for the post, but Gambhir was the frontrunner. The Kolkata Knight Riders mentor played a key role in leading the franchise to the title after 10 years in IPL 2024. In such a situation, his claim for the post of head coach of Team India has become stronger.

According to a report in Dainik Bhaskar, the BCCI will make Gautam Gambhir's appointment official in the coming days. Quoting a source, the report said that Gautam Gambhir has accepted the offer of the head coach of the Indian team, but he had put forward some demands and the board has accepted them. A BCCI source told Dainik Bhaskar, “We have discussed with Gambhir to become the head coach of the Indian team. He will replace Rahul Dravid after the T20 World Cup.”

Gambhir told the BCCI that he would accept the position only if he was given the freedom to decide the support staff. His demand has been accepted and the board will officially announce the appointment of Gambhir as the head coach by the end of this month. Vikram Rathod replaced Sanjay Bangar as the batting coach when Ravi Shastri was the head coach. Dravid retained Rathod in the support staff. Currently, Paras Mhambrey and T Dilip are the bowling and fielding coaches respectively. The report also revealed that Gambhir will not only make changes in the support staff but also in the team.
