Let us tell you that in this World Cup, the Indian team management had decided to make veteran batsman Virat Kohli open the innings. However, their decision has proved wrong so far as Kohli has played three matches and has not been able to touch the double-digit mark in any match. On the other hand, the form of captain Rohit Sharma also remains a matter of concern. He showed his form by scoring a half-century against Ireland in his first match but could not do anything special in the next two matches. In such a situation, while talking to news agency PTI on the pair of these two, Manjrekar has given a big statement.
He said, “If you have selected players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the World Cup, then obviously you have chosen experience. You want to take these players to the World Cup at a time when you really need experience. So if some players are not in form, then I am not worried. Now knockout matches are going to come and you expect your senior players to play big innings in decisive matches like semi-finals and finals.”
The cricketer turned commentator says, “If a young player puts his hand up, it will be a bonus for the team. Inzamam-ul-Haq did the same for Pakistan in the 1992 World Cup. Senior players have to contribute in such tournaments and I think keeping this in mind, the selectors go for experienced players. Especially when a big tournament like the World Cup comes, this is what we get to see.”
