Sybrand Engelbrecht retirement: The performance of the Netherlands in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 was not very good and the team had to be eliminated from the group stage itself. The Netherlands had to bid farewell after suffering a crushing defeat against Sri Lanka in their last group match. At the same time, as soon as his team was eliminated, key batsman Sybrand Engelbrecht has announced his retirement from international cricket. There was no possibility of Engelbrecht's retirement but he has surprised everyone with such a big announcement suddenly.
Sybrand Engelbrecht, who played for South Africa at the Under-19 level, made his international debut for the Netherlands last year and also participated in the ODI World Cup. He played some great innings during the tournament and managed to impress everyone. In his career, Engelbrecht played 12 ODIs and 12 T20 International matches. During this, he managed to score a total of 685 runs. While bowling, he also took 5 wickets in T20 Internationals.
Sybrand Engelbrecht did not show anything special with the bat in the last match of his international career but he won everyone's heart with his amazing fielding on the boundary line during Sri Lanka's innings. Tim Pringle was bowling the 17th over of Sri Lanka's innings and he bowled a full toss on the second ball, taking advantage of which Angelo Mathews was trying to hit a six in the mid-wicket area but Engelbrecht came in between and he jumped backwards in the air and threw the ball inside the field with one hand and himself fell on the other side of the boundary line. He saved 5 runs with his brilliant fielding and forced everyone to praise him.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time that Sybrand Engelbrecht has garnered attention for his tremendous fielding. Earlier, he won everyone's heart with his excellent fielding in the 2008 Under-19 World Cup. Let us tell you that Engelbrecht retired from all forms of cricket in 2016 to focus on his career in finance and project management and then after settling in the Netherlands in 2021, he started playing cricket recreationally there and later also played for the national team.
