The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 ended in a disappointment for Pakistan, despite a three-wicket victory over Ireland in Lauderhill. Despite being the 2009 champions, Pakistan’s campaign was largely forgettable, as they labored to chase down Ireland’s modest total of 107, needing nearly 19 overs to do so.
Ireland were in dire straits earlier, reduced to 32/6 in the seventh over. However, Gareth Delany and Josh Little managed to steer the Irish innings to a respectable 106/9.
“We weren’t thinking that Ireland would score 106 runs and Pakistan would need 19 overs to chase,” said Virender Sehwag on Cricbuzz.
“While Pakistan secured a victory, their performance was puzzling. They allowed Ireland to recover from a precarious 32/6 to post 106 runs. The pitch did not seem difficult and even Ireland’s bowling was not impressive but Pakistan struggled in the chase,” he continued.
Sehwag stated that dressing room issues impact players’ on-field performances.
“There’s a reason why they’re termed unpredictable. During this World Cup, they have often played poorly, though we can never be certain whether they will excel or struggle on any given day. The dynamics in their dressing room and relationships between players play a role in unpredictable results.
“Player discontent with the captain or divisions in the dressing room, can impact performance. However, the focus should remain on playing for the country. While this particular match may have lasted longer than ideal, the important thing is that the team ultimately emerged victorious,” he added.
Sehwag stated that Pakistan need to pick batters who can play at a respectable strike rate.
“Babar Azam and his team must reflect on their approach to T20 cricket and devise a new strategy for success. Even in favorable pitch conditions, they have struggled to defeat opposition teams,” opined Sehwag.
“To have a chance at the next T20 World Cup, the team must play differently than Babar Azam’s style. While a few players have similar strike rates, that approach is insufficient in T20 cricket. The selectors need to identify batters with high strike rates, whether from the PSL or domestic competitions, and give them opportunities. Just as Babar Azam didn’t become an elite player overnight, these new talents will require time to develop. The team must be patient and provide ample chances for these high-potential players to prove themselves,” he concluded.
