Former Indian cricketer Deep Dasgupta believes that Virat Kohli should provide India with a strong start in the Super 8 stage of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. While Dasgupta agreed that a strong individual effort would be needed, he also said that a vital innings from Kohli would be a key to India’s victory.

In a discussion on Star Sports, Dasgupta used Rohit Sharma‘s performance as an example to suggest that India would be seeking a rapid 20-25 runs from Kohli in the next round.

“The number of runs scored is important, but in the opening position and in this particular format, the impact of those runs is even more crucial. For example, posting 30 runs in just 20 balls is very much crucial than a 45 ball 50. Ultimately, the impact of the runs you score is the most important factor,” Dasgupta remarked.

“These are high-pressure matches where you need to deliver impactful performances. Consider Rohit Sharma’s example – while he may not have scored big runs in the last 1-1.5 years, he consistently provides momentum to the team with his innings. Even a 15-ball 20-25 run knock is valuable, as it sets the tone. Of course, scoring a fifty or a hundred is ideal, but Rohit’s ability to contribute a handy 15-ball 25 is equally important,” the former India wicketkeeper-batter explained.

Additionally, Deep Dasgupta stated that he is not bothered by Virat Kohli’s form.

“I think form is not an essential factor in T20 cricket. If a player like Virat Kohli fails to score runs in a couple of matches, it doesn’t make him a bad player. Given Kohli’s exceptional track record and ability, I am not at all concerned about his recent performances,” he added.

In the ongoing tournament, Kohli has been dismissed repeatedly while attempting high-risk shots. He may want to reconsider his strategy and instead focus on patiently to construct his innings before unleashing the assault on the opposition in upcoming matches.
