It is worth noting that the BCCI had fixed May 27 as the last date for sending applications for the post of head coach. During that time Gambhir was playing the role of mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders team in IPL 2024. After the final of the tournament, there was a long conversation between Gambhir and BCCI secretary Jay Shah.

Since then, the news of Gambhir becoming the next head coach of Team India started gaining discussion.

Even though Gambhir does not have any coaching experience at the international level yet, under his mentorship, KKR tasted the trophy in the 17th season of IPL.
