Captain Aiden Markram told his team not to be “scared” of the championship match after leading South Africa to their first-ever T20 World Cup final.
After crushing Afghanistan by nine wickets in the first semifinal, South Africa now has to wait to find out who wins the second match between India and England in the last four.
During the post-match award ceremony, Markram said, “It is one more step for us; it (the final) is an opportunity we have never had, nothing to be scared of.”
“This victory is significant. Even though our team has several elite players, as I’ve previously said, a whole squad is needed to produce a performance like this.
Markram was proud of his bowlers for limiting Afghanistan to a meager 56 runs.
“We played incredibly simply, got the ball in the proper places, and were excellent with it. For us, the bowlers have been amazing.
Markram remarked that because of the pitch’s noticeable seam movement, batting was a little difficult.
Since no hitter would tell you it was simple out there, it was hard with the bat. After a little bit of good fortune, we formed a little partnership.
The 29-year-old said that after winning the game with ease, the whole squad felt relieved.
A few folks back home would have woken up early with extra gray hair after a couple of our tight games. I’m glad today provided some more solace,” he said.
In 2014, Markram captained South Africa to the Under-19 men’s championship in Dubai and won every game while serving as captain at the World Cup.
Their main objective, according to player of the match Marco Jansen, was to maintain the ball in the proper places after taking three early wickets.
Fantastic sensation. We performed flawlessly, and the players played incredibly well. All we wanted to do was follow the strategy, bowl good distances, and see the wicket’s reaction.
“It was important to maintain simplicity, as the wicket was becoming somewhat exposed.”
