Men’s T20 World Cup captain Aiden Markram of South Africa said his team was lucky to lose the toss after his team defeated Afghanistan by nine wickets to win the title. He said that he would have also decided to bat first had he won the toss.
When given the opportunity to bowl first, South Africa showed off their mettle right away, taking eight wickets in the opening ten overs of the game and limiting Afghanistan to a pitiful 56 in 11.5 overs.
In response, Reeza Hendricks (29*) and Aiden Markram (23) destroyed any Afghan threat to chase down the total inside nine overs, securing their first-ever Men’s World Cup final, despite the early wicket of Quinton de Kock (5), collected by Fazalhaq Farooqi (1/11).
“It feels nice. It takes a tremendous team effort to get here; the captain alone does not do it alone. There are a lot of men working behind the scenes. We were fortunate not to win the toss since we would have also batted. We kept things simple, got the ball in the proper places, and were excellent with it.
We’ve had amazing bowlers for us,” Markram said after the game.“It was challenging with the bat; no batter is going to lie and tell you it was easy out there,” Markram said in reference to the other 14 players on the team as well as the supporters back home. After a little bit of luck, we formed a little partnership. A few folks back home would have woken up early with extra gray hair after one or two of our tight games. I’m glad it was a little more consoling today,” he stated.
“We are taking a step forward; it’s a chance we’ve never had before; there’s nothing to be afraid of. We have some elite players on the team, but as I’ve said, it takes a team to put on a show like this, so this victory means a lot,” Markram remarked.
Selected as the team’s player of the match, Jansen praised his captain as well as the team’s straightforward strategy. “All we had to do was follow the strategy and bowl the best ball we could. We wanted to keep things basic, and the wicket was providing us with a few to work with, according to the evaluation.
“Having Markram as a captain is fantastic.”We’ll have fun tonight and go out again,” he said.
To find out who will face them in the final, which is set for June 29 in Barbados, South Africa will now have to wait for the outcome of the second semifinal between India and the reigning champions, England.
It’s interesting to note that South Africa would become the first side to win the T20 World Cup without losing if they prevailed in the final.
