First, a 3-0 defeat in the women's ODI series. Then just a few days ago, Team India, captained by Rohit Sharma, defeated South Africa in the final and won the T20 World Cup 2024 title. Just two days later, the team captained by Harmanpreet Kaur defeated South Africa's women's team in a Test match. After 5 consecutive heartbreaking defeats in just 15 days, South Africa finally got success against India. South Africa's women's team defeated Team India by 12 runs in the first match of the T20 series.
The first match of the T20 series between India and South Africa was played at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Smriti Mandhana, Jemima Rodrigues, Shefali Verma, who showed their prowess in the Test series, showed their power here too but still Team India had to face defeat because this time South Africa played much better. South Africa batted first in this match and scored 189 runs in 20 overs by losing 4 wickets.South African captain Laura Woolfart (33), who scored a brilliant century in the Test match, gave the team a quick start here too and shared a 50-run partnership with Tazmin Brits. After this, Brits's performance was seen, who played a brilliant innings of 81 runs in just 56 balls and took the team to a big score.
Apart from her, star all-rounder Marijan Kapp also scored 57 runs in just 33 balls. For Team India, Radha Yadav and Pooja Vastrakar took 2-2 wickets, but the rest of the bowlers proved to be very expensive.Like ODIs and Tests, the opening pair of Shefali and Smriti again gave the team a quick start and together added 56 runs. Shefali was out early, but Mandhana's attack continued and she took the team close to 90 runs by the 10th over. Here Mandhana was out after scoring 46 runs while Dayalan Hemalatha was also out on the first ball of the next over.
Every batsman played a fast innings for South Africa but Team India's batsmen could not do so. Hemalatha scored only 14 runs in 17 balls, while captain Harmanpreet Kaur played an innings of 35 runs but wasted 29 balls. Jemima Rodriguez scored a quick 53 runs in 30 balls but Team India still managed to reach only 177 runs and lost by 12 runs.
