Consistent with his principles of equitable profit-sharing, outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid declined the additional ₹2.5 crore bonus that the BCCI had awarded him – an amount same as the bonuses to India‘s victorious T20 World Cup squad. Dravid opted instead to receive the same performance bonus as the rest of his support staff.
“Rahul requested the same bonus payment of ₹2.5 crore that was awarded to the rest of his support staff, including the bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, fielding coach T Dilip, and batting coach Vikram Rathore. The organization respects Rahul’s sentiments in this matter,” stated a BCCI source.
According to the board’s prize money distribution formula, each of the 15 players in India’s victorious squad, as well as Dravid, received ₹5 crore from the total ₹125 crore prize. Meanwhile, the support staff were allotted ₹2.5 crore per person, and the selectors and travelling squad members were awarded ₹1 crore each.
As head coach of India’s victorious U-19 World Cup 2018 team, Dravid had previously advocated for equal compensation. However, when the BCCI proposed a tiered payment structure – ₹50 lakh for Dravid, ₹20 lakh for support staff, and ₹30 lakh for players – Dravid rejected the formula, insisting that everyone be awarded equally.
Despite his illustrious playing career, Rahul Dravid had never won a World Cup title. However, he finally achieved that feat as the head coach of India’s triumphant T20 World Cup team. During the victory celebrations, captain Rohit Sharma, senior player Virat Kohli, and others brought Dravid to the forefront. In fact, it was Rohit who had convinced Dravid to continue as head coach for the T20 World Cup, following India’s loss in the ODI World Cup finals the previous year.
