Three regular players were not available for India's ODI series against the West Indies (Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan and Axar Patel), leaving not only the middle order but also a spot behind the stumps vacant. Even when the selection committee announced the team, Rishabh Pant's name was not in it. Instead, Dhruv Jurel was selected as the reserve wicketkeeper after KL Rahul.

It is clear that this decision has made the current situation more difficult for Pant in his ODI career and not just a temporary hindrance. Pant played his last ODI match against Sri Lanka in August 2024. He played only one match in that series because the selectors had given preference to Rahul over him as a wicketkeeper. Since then, Pant has remained a key part of India's Test scheme, but his status in the 50-over format has steadily weakened.

In such a situation, the series against West Indies seemed to be a way for him to make a comeback as Kishan's absence had created a space for the wicketkeeper-batsman slot. There is no Iyer on it, which left a clear space in the middle order as well. Even with Akshar's absence, the team lost one more batsman. Therefore, Pant could have fulfilled more than one need but now it is clear that for Ajit Agarkar's committee, there are other names in preference in ODI because the team is getting better balance with him. Even chose Jurel and not Pant.

In this way, Pant's case has become very unique and his red ball and white ball careers are now moving in completely different directions. Still, lack of opportunity is a reason to note. Pant has played only one ODI match since the end of 2022. The initial reason for his long absence then was a car accident in December 2022 due to which he stayed away from cricket for more than a year. He returned during the IPL in 2024, but even after regaining fitness, he did not get a chance to play regular ODIs.

On the other hand, there was a change in India's wicketkeeping scene also. Jurel is constantly changing the equation. Rahul is already established as India's top ODI wicketkeeper, while Kishan is a great option when available. In this way, the challenge for Pant has increased even more from within the team. It is also understood that the current selectors are not putting the responsibility of every format on the same wicketkeeper. Therefore, the first challenge for Pant is not Rahul or Kishan but Jurel. Once Iyer, Akshar and Kishan return, it will become more difficult.
