MS Dhoni is behind Zaheer Khan’s appointment as Chennai Super Kings’ head coach. The veteran pacer replaced Stephen Fleming, who left the five-time champions after 18 years. CSK confirmed Zaheer’s appointment on Monday, ending months of speculation since the departure of the former New Zealand captain.

According to The Indian Express, Dhoni was given the responsibility of finding a suitable candidate, and he spoke to several contenders before joining CSK owners for a final discussion after returning from the USA.

It was during the conversation that Dhoni took Zaheer’s name.

“MS Dhoni suggested Zaheer Khan’s name and the management team, comprising Rupa and Ruturaj Gaikwad, agreed,” CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan told the newspaper.

Zaheer has signed a contract for one year, with the possibility of extending his stay.

He has been associated with multiple franchises in the Indian Premier League. Zaheer was part of the Mumbai Indians from 2018 till 20222 and worked as a director of cricket operations before becoming global head of development. He was Lucknow Super Giants’ mentor as well.

CSK were looking for an Indian coach who would only be working in the IPL and have no connection with other franchises in other leagues across the globe.

He is renowned for getting the best out of young cricketers, and CSK wanted a person who could rebuild the team after missing the playoffs for three seasons.

What happened with Hemang Badani?

According to The Times of India, Hemang Badani was leading the race, but he was not pleased with the terms and conditions of the contract. Badani was given the impression that he would manage Super Kings’ franchises in different leagues, but everything changed when Albie Morkel became head coach of Joburg Super Kings in the SA20.

CSK were offering a one-year contract, but Badani wanted a two-year stint to reshape the team.
