In every generation, a cricketer rises from the ranks and captivates cricket-loving fans, and even legends, with an unprecedented style. And for the legendary Sri Lankan opener Sanath Jayasuriya, who redefined the art of aggressive batting in his time, he feels Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is the man of the hour with a style that is different from most of his contemporaries.

In the recent exclusive interview with Nishant Poonia for Sports Yaari, the veteran was effusive in his praise for the young sensation and even lauded the budding opener in the highest terms.

A Different Breed of Fearless Cricket: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Sooryavanshi has been making a name for himself with his audacious strokes and an unflinching approach at the crease, which has been surprising many given his age. Jayasuriya, a legend in his time, was also known to have taken apart bowlers with a similar approach.

Reflecting on the young man's talent, Jayasuriya said: “Different kind of talent. I have never seen a player like him before because of the way he plays and the fearless cricket he is playing.”

It is not just the runs that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been scoring with a certain flamboyance that has attracted the former Sri Lanka captain's attention. It is the fearless attitude with which the youngster goes about his batting.

At the highest level of the game, young players are often required to rein in their instincts. However, Jayasuriya feels that the system should allow Sooryavanshi to flourish in his instincts.

“I think they should let him play his natural game,” Jayasuriya said. “It will be a big advantage for him because it will help him survive longer in the system.”

Trusting the System and the Timing

While Sooryavanshi's name is being bandied about in cricketing circles, the former opener for Sri Lanka feels it is important to trust the system before embarking on a full-time international career.

“I think the system will take care of him,” Jayasuriya said. “The selectors, coach, and captain will know the right time to unleash him on the world stage.”

Until then, the youngster's talents will continue to blossom under the watchful eyes of those entrusted to nurture and develop his gifts. In the meantime, it appears the system may be looking to unleash on the world stage a young man who, according to one of the game's most enduring legends, is quite simply one of a kind.
