Will Jacks produced a brilliant all-round performance during England’s 89-run victory against Sri Lanka in the 1st ODI match played at Riverside Ground.

After scoring 46* runs off 47 deliveries, he delivered a breathtaking spell, returning with figures of 5/22, setting up a 1-0 lead for the side in the three-match series.

Batting first, England’s Tom Banton and Ben Duckett failed to give a start as the former got dismissed for 10 runs. With Duckett and Joe Root at the crease, England scored 64 runs in the powerplay.

Wellalage sent back Duckett for 32 runs on an LBW. However, Joe Root and England captain Harry Brook stitched a decent partnership of 68 runs before Colombage sent back the former for 44 runs.

Colombage bagged his second wicket dismissing Jos Buttler for 31 runs. However, Harry Brook crossed the 50-run mark, scoring 67 runs off 69 deliveries.

With Will Jacks standing firm at one end, the lower order lost their wickets at the other end at short intervals. Atkinson added 14 runs before his dismissal by Madushanka.

However, England lost all 10 wickets for 265 runs where Will Jacks remaining unbeaten on 46*.

Sachindu Colombage and Asitha Fernando bagged three wickets each, while Madushanka, Chameera and Dunith Wellalage bagged one wicket each.

Chasing the 266-run target, Sri Lankan openers Pathum Nissanka and Kamindu Mendis failed to give a start as the latter got dismissed for 14 runs.

With Kusal Mendis joining Nissanka, Sri Lanka scored 40 runs in the powerplay. With Tongue dismissing Nissanka for 27 runs, Sri Lanka lost two wickets for 48 runs.

Kusal Mendis made a decent knock scoring 42 runs while the middle order including Rathnayake, Asalanka and Janith Liyanage lost their wickets at intervals.

After Mendis’ dismissal for 42 runs, Wellalage did make 36-ball 45 before being dismissed by Will Jacks. He bagged his fourth and fifth wicket in the same over dismissing the remainder of the line up as Sri Lanka got bowled out for 176 runs.

Will Jacks was named player of the Match. Speaking on the post match presentation, Jacks said, “I think it was a really good all-round performance from the team, and personally I was happy with how we kind of ushered the innings at the end there. We had a bit of a tricky period, 10-15 overs, but we were trying to do things in the right way and get to a good score.”
