India and West Indies are set to battle it out in the third and final One Day International (ODI) at New Chandigarh on Saturday as opener Rohit Sharma adds another feather to his cap on his way to another milestone.
The right-handed opener broke the long-standing record of Sachin Tendulkar during the opening over of India's innings as he added two more runs to his tally to register a five-figure score of 10,000 ODI runs as an opener.
Rohit achieved the feat on the third ball of the match as a two-run flick off Jayden Seales.
In this manner, he became the quickest batsman to reach the milestone while opening the batting in men's ODIs.
Rohit became the fastest ever opener to 10,000 ODI runs in just 202 innings, beating Tendulkar's previous best of 214 innings. Tendulkar reached the mark against Australia in Brisbane in 2004.
It was yet another sign of Rohit's exceptional consistency at the top of the order as he leapfrogged a former India teammate into the record books.
Fastest to 10,000 ODI runs as an opener:
Rohit Sharma – 202 innings
Sachin Tendulkar – 214 innings
Chris Gayle – 268 innings
Sanath Jayasuriya – 303 innings
Rohit has become only the fourth opener in men's ODI history to pass 10,000 runs. He now joins a select group that includes Tendulkar, West Indies legend Chris Gayle and Sri Lanka great Sanath Jayasuriya.
The milestone came one match after another memorable performance for the veteran. In the second ODI, Rohit smashed a commanding 101 off 75 deliveries, hitting 10 fours and six sixes.
It was a century that also saw Rohit become only the third Indian batsman after Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to reach 12,000 ODI runs. His latest achievement means he has achieved two major career milestones in consecutive matches in the series.
Rohit Sharma's recent run has come at a time when his future in India's ODI plans has attracted considerable attention. The veteran opener had been questioned on whether he should continue to take a place in the side after then-chief selector Ajit Agarkar suggested the team was considering Yashasvi Jaiswal as part of its plans.
Despite the uncertainty, Rohit remained as India's first-choice opener for the three-match series against the West Indies.
His performances on the field have been a strong response to the concerns. After his century in the second ODI, Rohit reached another important milestone in the third match and continued to maintain an impressive record at the top of the order.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon, Rohit's performances and consistency will be closely monitored as India considers their long-term plans for the tournament.
