Abhishek Sharma is back in form, and the opening batter is playing match-winning innings for India in T20I matches. He credited the freedom provided by coaches and teammates for his success with the bat and revealed that he is not going after milestones, as his only aim is to win matches and trophies for the country.
The 26-year-old was a part of the squad that won the 2026 T20 World Cup at home and recently helped the Men in Blue win the Asian Games 2026 gold medal in men’s cricket competition. Abhishek also highlighted the importance of domestic tournaments for his growth and put emphasis on playing impactful innings rather than chasing numbers.
“When I started playing cricket, I thought of impacting the game for my team. Punjab won the domestic tournament in 2024, and I made sure that I was not chasing milestones, as that is something which is not in your hands. You can only control your impact on the game.
“I don’t care about the opposition, as my approach is more important to me. As a player, I never had an urge to achieve this or achieve that. I want to win trophies. You need support from the team management, players, the coaches and the captain because they know everything about you.
“They have helped me a lot. The entire squad, not just the support staff, especially the senior players, have been giving me inputs to better my game. The new players should be given freedom to express themselves in the middle. They should feel that they belong to this stage. I enjoy talking to Vaibhav or other young players,” Abhishek told JioStar.
The backing has been crucial in Abhishek’s career so far, as it has allowed him to dominate the batting charts and rival bowlers without thinking about the statistical gains.
He will now be seen in action in the upcoming five-match T20I series against the West Indies. There is no confirmation whether Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or Sanju Samson will open with Abhishek.
