For the last few months, fans have been clamouring for the return of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami to the national side. One of their demands has been fulfilled with Kumar returning to the T20I side for the series against New Zealand, which starts in a few weeks. On the other hand, there is no news on Shami’s comeback to international cricket.
Ravichandran Ashwinwho has played with both cricketers, said that he won’t rule out the Bengal pacer’s recall now that Bhuvi is back. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the 40-year-old said, “The chairman of selectors is going to be changed, and Ajit Agarkar is no longer in charge. Maybe Ajit was more focused on newcomers and younger bowlers.”
The former CSK star also went on to add, “Without Bumrah, Indian bowling can be a bit weak and suspect. BCCI is now leaning towards experience. They have picked Kumar, and I wouldn’t close the door on Shami either. But I am really happy that Bhuvneshwar has broken the door for his selection.”
Ashwin recently said that the Royal Challengers Bengaluru star has to be considered for the ODI World Cup due to his experience. For now, the Meerut-based fast bowler has been recalled to the T20I team, and if his performances impress the selection panel, he could also make his return to the ODI format.
R Ashwin is backing Bhuvneshwar Kumar for ODIs. “He is going to New Zealand now, and if Kumar does well, everyone will want him to be picked for the ODI team as well, and the selectors will also be watching closely. If he swings the ball and shows fitness, no one can stop Bumrah and Bhuvi from sitting together on that flight for the World Cup and the latter bowling the first ball.”
According to Ashwin, the below-par showing by the Indian bowlers during the West Indies could prompt an ODI recall as well. “The bowling department needs experience after getting smashed around in the ODI series against West Indies. If you go to places like South Africa and bowl half-heartedly, the rivals could roast you.”
The team is also dealing with fitness issues. As per Ashwin, if any bowler gets injured during the upcoming tour, then Bhuvi could be added to the ODI side as well.
