Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could enter the IPL 2027 mini-auction with a significantly overhauled squad after posting a disastrous 2026 campaign. The five-time champions failed to make it to the play-offs and might now consider a complete revamp ahead of the next season.
CSK will need to utilize its resources wisely to put together a competitive squad that has its eyes set on winning the IPL 2027.
The Tamil Nadu-based franchise has relied mainly on its core team of experienced players in recent years, but it could now turn to more aggressive strategies regarding high-profile acquisitions.
Some of their heavily bid players failed to deliver the desired results this season, which raises questions about their future in Chennai. Releasing them would not only give the CSK management an opportunity to bring in fresh talent but also free up some considerable funds for the next mega auction.

1. Prashant Veer (₹14.20 crore)
Prashant Veer fetched CSK the record sum of ₹14.20 crore in CSK's previous auction as a left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder. This was seen as a shrewd buy at the time as Veer came into the side with the potential to evolve into a match-winner with both ends of the bat and ball.
But Veer failed to justify his staggering price tag at the IPL 2026, scoring only 90 runs in six games and failing to be a consistent influence with either end of the bat and ball. He didn't deliver enough with the ball either to give CSK the all-round impact that they would have demanded considering the amount of money spent on him.
With such a huge amount of cash spent on him, Veer will present an interesting dilemma to CSK ahead of the mini-auction. They could afford to retain him for another year to see if he can evolve into a match-winner. However, if they do release him, the funds will enable them to strengthen different parts of their game. Considering how much money went towards him, CSK will need to make a difficult decision.
2. Rahul Chahar (₹5.20 crore)
Chahar was signed by CSK to bolster their spin attack and provide control in the middle overs. But the leg-spinner was handed only one opportunity in IPL 2026, ending up with figures of 0/46 in his four overs against Punjab Kings in his only appearance of the tournament.
Chahar has been a consistent performer in the IPL, but with CSK needing more from their spinner following their failure to qualify for the playoffs, he may not be able to convince them to keep him despite the hefty ₹5.20 crore spent on him. Chahar's inconsistency with the bat and ball could see him being substituted with a more consistent spinner.
But the IPL experience that Chahar brings to the table can work in his favour. Whether or not he becomes redundant ahead of IPL 2027 will depend on CSK's ability to find a more consistent option, as well as the amount of money that they have to spend on other players.
3. Matt Henry (₹2 crore)
New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry was signed ahead of IPL 2025 on a ₹2 crore deal for his ability to bring width to the bowling attack and pick up crucial early wickets. But instead, Henry found himself being the main culprit for expensive spells for CSK in the tournament, ending up with an economy rate of 11.52.
This was detrimental to the team's chances, especially in the powerplays. By picking up a bowler with such a poor economy, CSK will have to explore other avenues to strengthen their bowling attack, specifically those offering a better economy.
CSK could look to find an overseas fast bowler to partner up with Shardul Thakur ahead of IPL 2027. The duo combined for 7/49 against Rajasthan Royals in the final of the last season. A similar partnership would pose a threat to any opening pair in the business.
Even though a more economical bowler would offer better options for CSK, the release of Henry will not open up as much money as some of the other three players considered above. Whether or not he will be released will depend on CSK's ability to find a more suitable fast bowler.
4. Matthew Short (₹1.50 crore)
Australian all-rounder Matthew Short is another player who could find himself being released by CSK. Signed ahead of IPL 2025 for ₹1.50 crore, Short was an interesting acquisition for the franchise as someone who could add depth to their batting and provide an occasional option with the ball.
But instead, Short failed to impress during IPL 2026, playing only 3 matches for the franchise. He managed to score 60 runs in the process, but not enough for the management to retain him.
Due to overseas players carrying a premium in the IPL, they are a luxury that not every franchise can afford.
And if Short isn't likely to turn up regularly for CSK, it would make more sense for them to release him and utilize the funds to bring in a specialist batter that they could count on consistently. Even if Short was to play a larger role in the upcoming season, his ability to contribute with the ball could see him being dropped in favor of a specialist.
CSK's potential moves on the four players considered above will represent a larger conundrum that they face ahead of the mini-auction. Decisions to release players with a high price tag come with the risk of losing out on their potential to bolster different departments of the game.
Prashant Veer comes with the biggest financial risk, followed by Rahul Chahar and Matt Henry. Matthew Short will likely not figure in the plans of CSK any longer if they continue to struggle for regularity with the bat. With a disappointing campaign in IPL 2026, CSK will look to utilize their budget ahead of the mini-auction to the fullest.
But a release of any of these players doesn't necessarily indicate that they aren't a good acquisition. Several factors will need to be considered, such as what other players are available at the auction, the requirements of the team and the ones that they already possess. For CSK to be in a position to utilize their budget to the fullest, they will need to consider the right release of these players.
