IPL 2027 Auction: 3 Teams That Could Target Shai Hope After His 45-Ball Ton

For years, Shai Hope was pigeonholed. In the minds of the global cricketing public, the Barbadian elegance master was seen primarily as an anchor, a Test-match purist whose classical stroke-play belonged in fifty-over form rather than the violent, high-variance theater of T20S.

Then came Ranchi.

When the West Indies captain walked out under intense pressure, his side reeling at two down in the very first over of a daunting 250-run chase against India, the script was supposedly written. Instead, Hope tore that script to shreds. Bludgeoning an unbeaten 102 off just 45 balls, punctuated by six fours and nine colossal sixes at a blistering strike rate of 226.67, Hope not only steered his team to a historic victory but also completely reinvented his white-ball narrative.

Following a stellar tour of India that has showcased his evolving power-hitting, the cricket world is asking one inevitable question: Is Shai Hope the ultimate prize waiting to be claimed at the upcoming IPL 2027 mini auction?

Having previously featured only once in the cash-rich league back in 2024 with the Delhi Capitals and surprisingly going unsold at the 2026 mini auction, Hope's latest masterclass has turned heads across franchises.

Here are three IPL teams that should (and likely will) be keeping a very close eye on the West Indies skipper.

1. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

The Need for Stability and Strength at the Top

While a prolific Ajinkya Rahane laid his bat down across all formats, the Kolkata Knight Riders find themselves missing a crucial upper-order batsman in their order.

The Knight Riders tried different pairings with Rahane, including the pairing with Finn Allen and constant juggling of the order last season, but struggled to get explosive starts in the powerplay. Even then, they often found themselves in trouble in the middle overs if the openers failed to accelerate the scoring rate.

Shai Hope has proven, with his recent knock in Ranchi, that he is not only a deep anchor but also knows when to cut loose and turn the innings on its head.

Additionally, Shai Hope's ability to act as a wicketkeeper-batter means that KKR can free up a foreign slot elsewhere in the XI for a bowler of real quality.

2. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)

The need for the Lucknow Super Giants ahead of the 2027 season is for greater batting depth as well as a fine balance between sheer aggression and tactical nous.

While Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh were able to provide rock-solid top-order partnerships, LSG has struggled to find an insurance policy in case of injury or international call-up.

Following the big trade of Rishabh Pant to Delhi Capitals, the need for a world-class wicketkeeper-batter is even greater for the Super Giants, who have Inglis and Nicholas Pooran in their ranks.

However, adding Shai Hope to the mix means another calm pair of hands behind the stumps.

Hope's knock in Ranchi was a masterclass in recovery, as he batted through the early overs and then accelerated the scoring rate.

For a team that has struggled when losing early wickets, especially in the top order, a stay-at-home batter who can rebuild the innings without losing too many runs is a handy addition.

3. Delhi Capitals (DC)

Familiarity often breeds success in cricket, and Shai Hope knows the Delhi Capitals better than anyone else in the tournament.

While his single season in the orange jersey ended in 2024, he was a useful member of the squad, scoring 183 runs in 9 innings at a strike rate of 150.00. However, the Shai Hope of 2024 is a different prospect altogether.

The opening partnerships have been a concern for the Capitals throughout the campaign.

While KL Rahul has batted at number 3, DC has struggled to find a suitable opening partner, with Abhishek Porel, Sahil Parakh, and Pathum Nissanka all filling the role with mixed results.

A return to Delhi would make sense if the Capitals do indeed have a vacancy at the top of the order.

The Verdict

The T20 game is all about adaptability, and Shai Hope has proven to be a master of that art. The ability to anchor a collapsing innings and steer it towards a successful chase with a flurry of sixes and fours in a matter of overs is a rarity in limited-overs cricket. With the IPL auction approaching, the man from Barbados has ensured that teams will no longer be asking if Hope can fit into a T20 innings, but rather how quickly they can sign him up.
