India have been under the scanner over the last few months due to their lapses in the field. The players are dropping catches, with one glaring example being the two chances spilled in the Asian Games 2026 final. The batter on both occasions was Hasan Nawaz, who went on to score 96 runs but failed to avoid a loss by 19 runs.

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthikspeaking on Cricbuzz, said that the current fielding standards were a huge cause of concern. “They let go of the previous fielding coach. I’m sure it came to a point where the management felt that he wouldn’t take the team forward,” he said. T Dilip was not given a contract extension after India toured England and was replaced by Shubhadeep Ghosh.

“Now, it is Ghosh, the newly appointed fielding coach, who will be under the scanner.

He has to make sure that the Indian team fields better or he may face the heat.” During the second IND vs WI game in Ranchi, Mayank Yadav put down an easy chance off Kuldeep Yadav’s bowling to give Sherfane Rutherford a huge reprieve.

Karthik said the fielding standards have dropped: “You have to say in general that India’s fielding standards have dropped in the last few months. They will have to get better, as it is a key aspect of the game if they have to win the next World Cup.”

Ex-India star advises current fielding coach

The 41-year-old advised Shubhadeep that being part of the India side as a fielding coach will always attract eyeballs and criticism. “Being part of the Indian team is always a challenge, and he is a very talented coach. He has been around for some time now. He was also part of the India A side and was involved with the Andhra team. He has to figure out a way to make players stand in the right positions and hold onto their catches.”

India may have to heed their former player’s advice considering their sloppy fielding in the past few months. Playing in places like South Africa will not be easy, and the added pressure of playing in a World Cup could also have an effect on the players. This is where the role of the fielding coach comes into play, and his role will be key in the next 12 months.
