New Zealand have announced their squad for the upcoming five-match ODI series against India, with Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Rachin Ravindra and Tim Seifert among the notable inclusions. Mitchell Santner will captain the Black Caps as they prepare for another challenging assignment against the Indian side.
The ODI series will kick off on November 4 at Eden Park in Auckland, following the five-match T20I series to be played from October 22 to November 1. New Zealand will look to build on their historic 2-1 ODI series win over India in January, when they became the first team to win a bilateral ODI series against India on Indian soil.
Allen and Ferguson will return to New Zealand's ODI team after their last appearances in the format in 2023. Ferguson's last appearance was in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup semi-final against India in Mumbai, while Seifert's most recent ODI appearance was during New Zealand's home series against Pakistan nearly 18 months ago.
Meanwhile, Ravindra will return to the ODI team after missing the T20I series due to a shoulder injury. The all-rounder has been selected for the first three matches, as New Zealand look to challenge India again with another all-rounder option at the top of the order.
The squad will change after the third ODI, with seven more players joining the group for the final two matches. Several members of the initial group are expected to head to Wellington after the third match to begin their Test series against India. New Zealand Cricket said.
Santner will captain throughout the ODI series with Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Jacob Duffy, Blair Tickner and Will Young all appearing in both squads. The changes will allow New Zealand to balance out their resources between the white-ball and red-ball matches.
The squad for the first three ODIs is Santner, Bracewell, Chapman, Devon Conway, Duffy, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Ravindra, Nathan Smith, Young and Tickner.
While for the last two ODIs Allen, Bracewell, Chapman, Kristian Clarke, Duffy, Matt Fisher, Ferguson, Mitch Hay, Nick Kelly, Seifert, Tickner and Young will appear alongside captain Santner.
The selections provide opportunities for several players to return to international cricket, as well as giving New Zealand some flexibility as they begin their demanding schedule. The inclusion of Allen and Seifert could help the batting line-up, while Ferguson can add experience to the pace attack for the closing stages of the series.
New Zealand will also look to build on their previous success against India in the ODI format. New Zealand's 2-1 victory over the Men in Blue in January will be a big test for their depth as they tackle one of the strongest teams in the world.
New Zealand will soon turn their attention to the Test assignment against India as they prepare for a multi-format tour. New Zealand Cricket is expected to announce a 14-member Test squad in early November.
The staggered ODI selections reflect the team's need to balance their immediate white-ball commitments with their preparations for the longer format. For Santner and his teammates, the focus will initially be on carrying their previous successes from the ODI format into the next series and challenging the Men in Blue across five matches.
