Delhi: The debate regarding the impact player rule in IPL has once again intensified. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batting coach and mentor Dinesh Karthik has admitted that due to this rule, the opportunities to produce good all-rounders in Indian cricket have reduced. However, despite this they want this rule to be continued till IPL 2027.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik said that when the Impact Player rule was implemented in the IPL, along with big-scoring matches, exciting chases were also seen.
However, in the last season they did not see the same competition as before.Karthik said,
'Initially this rule was quite good. Big scores were being made and many teams were getting close to the target. But there were not many close matches last season. One team would score big and the other team would chase it and achieve the target. Gradually the attractiveness of this rule and its importance have started decreasing.
Dinesh Karthik also pointed out a major disadvantage of the Impact Player rule. According to him, this rule has helped in scoring more runs in IPL, but it has reduced the chances of producing all-rounders in Indian cricket.
He said, 'This rule has made the game more high-scoring than before, but it has definitely reduced the opportunities for producing all-rounders in India.'
Karthik made it clear that he is not in favor of removing this rule before the end of the current IPL cycle.
In this context, he said, “I would not like the impact player rule to be abolished this season, because the teams have been selected keeping this in mind. If suddenly a situation arises of playing with 11 players instead of 12 players, then some teams may be stronger with 11 players. This may give them an unfair advantage over others.”
Karthik believes that the decision to implement or remove any rule should be taken according to the scheduled cycle of the tournament.
He said that the impact player rule should also be considered for removal only after the completion of the cycle. He said, 'Any new rule should be implemented at the beginning of the cycle and if it is not to be continued, then it should be removed after the end of the cycle. The impact player rule was implemented midway. Now it doesn't seem right to remove it before the cycle is complete.”
How long does Dinesh Karthik want to continue the Impact Player rule?
Karthik is in favor of continuing it till IPL 2027.
What harm is being caused by the Impact Player rule?
