PUDUCHERRY : As Mitchell Starc comes to the back-end of his career, Australia left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson is building himself up to take over the mantle from the southpaw. Johnson, though, is himself 30 and his journey has been repeatedly interrupted by injuries.

His latest assignment with Australia ‘A’ in Puducherry offered a glimpse of what he can bring to the table. On a surface that offered little encouragement to fast bowlers, Johnson extracted disconcerting bounce and troubled India A’s batters, finishing with five wickets across his two appearances. His match-winning spell of 3-35 in the second unofficial ODI earned him the Player of the Match award and helped Australia ‘A’ clinch the series.
