Mumbai Indians are likely to appoint Rohit Sharma as their captain for IPL 2027, with the top management of the five-time champions almost certain to give the responsibility back to the most successful skipper. According to India Today, MI could turn to the veteran, signalling the end of Hardik Pandya’s tenure.

Rohit led Mumbai Indians to success in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. However, he was sacked, with Hardik Pandya getting the captain’s armband for IPL 2024 after the all-rounder was traded from the Gujarat Titans.

Mumbai have been ordinary in the last three seasons, with only one playoff finish in 2025. The champion team hasn’t won a title since 2020 and is yet to make it to the final.

Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma were also the top contenders, but the decision-makers are willing to go with Rohit, who is one of the best captains in the history of the league.

Meanwhile, Hardik is also willing to part ways with the Mumbai-based franchise, with Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings showing interest in one of the leading all-rounders in white-ball cricket.

Mumbai have spoken to several franchises, but everything depends on what MI get in return. Any trade would happen if both franchises agree on suitable terms and conditions. There has been no confirmation of any outcome.

Yashasvi Jaiswal could head to Mumbai Indians if Hardik joins the 2008 champions before the 20th season of the tournament. The southpaw could add more firepower to Mumbai’s batting unit and give the franchise a long-term opener.

With Rohit approaching 40, Jaiswal’s arrival could help the team in the long run. When Rohit decides to quit the Indian Premier League, Jaiswal could play an important role in the future.

With Rohit entering the fray, Suryakumar and Tilak’s chances have taken a hit. Suryakumar led the team in Hardik’s absence last season, and he was successful as Team India’s skipper in T20Is, leading the team to the T20 World Cup title in 2026.

Tilak could have been a long-term option as he was recently appointed as India’s vice-captain in the shortest format. Mumbai Indians could groom him for captaincy.

Rohit’s return could end the title drought and also improve the overall performances across departments.
