The Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen an interesting bowling swap happen before the 2027 season dawns. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have sent Tamil Nadu left-arm spinner T Natarajan back to Delhi Capitals in exchange for leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari.
This would give both the franchises an opportunity to plug their bowling needs ahead of the next edition of the league.
The trade was announced on October 14, and the spinner will join Hyderabad at the reduced contract fee of ₹5 crore, while Ansari will join Delhi at his existing fee of ₹40 lakh, reported Times of India.
The left-arm pacer was bought by Delhi Capitals at ₹10.75 crore at the IPL 2025 auction. Natarajan returns to Hyderabad with hopes of getting back to his best form while the leg-spinner looks to prove his worth at a new franchise.
Natarajan returns to Sunrisers Hyderabad after a difficult IPL 2026 campaign with Delhi Capitals
The Tamil Nadu pacer struggled to find his rhythm, only managing five wickets for the Delhi-based franchise while conceding 356 runs in 31.5 overs at an economy rate of 11.18. His best bowling figures of the season were 3/29.
For a bowler whose style revolves around accurate yorkers and effectiveness at the death, the figures encapsulated the challenge he faced during his time with Delhi Capitals. Containing batters at the death has proven to be a real challenge in the IPL, and Natarajan's 2026 season underlined his need to rediscover his consistency.
However, his previous successes for Hyderabad provide grounds for optimism that he can make an immediate impact for his new franchise.
Natarajan was with SRH from 2020 to 2024, and grew to be a critical part of their pace attack with his left-arm angle and ability to deliver yorkers under pressure.
His best season came in 2024, when he picked up 19 wickets to finish second in the wicket-taking charts for Hyderabad. He was instrumental in the franchise's march to the final, and his reputation as a reliable death bowler was reaffirmed.
The reunion gives SRH an opportunity to bring back a bowler familiar with the team's approach and expectations, and if Natarajan can channel the form that saw him shine in 2024, he could offer genuine competition to the franchise's pace bowling stocks for IPL 2027.
While Hyderabad are counting on their experience, Delhi Capitals have chosen to go with a spin-bowling option with room to grow. Ansari will join the franchise at his current contract value of ₹40 lakh, and offer the team another option for the middle overs.
The Uttar Pradesh leg-spinner made his IPL debut in 2025, picking up six wickets in 10 appearances. He had one of his best spells against Delhi Capitals themselves, taking three wickets on debut.
Ansari did not play a single match in IPL 2026, and his last campaign provides the best reference when it comes to understanding his experience at the highest level of franchise cricket. The trade to Delhi Capitals could give him an opportunity to return to the playing XI, and he will look to make the most of the opportunity.
At 26, the leg-spinner offers a different dimension to Delhi's bowling resources. His ability to turn the ball away from right-handed batsmen and play a role in the middle overs could give the franchise greater flexibility with its bowling combinations.
However, he will need to make the most of his opportunities if he is to secure a regular spot in the XI. The trade gives Ansari a new environment in which to prove his worth.
The exchange encapsulates two contrasting philosophies for building an IPL squad ahead of the new season. While Sunrisers Hyderabad are looking to bring back a proven performer, Delhi Capitals have chosen to go with a leg-spinner with room for growth.
For SRH, the return of Natarajan is an opportunity to bolster their pace bowling stocks with a bowler familiar with the local conditions and the team's expectations. Natarajan's 2024 season was his best in terms of wicket-taking, and he can use his past successes with the franchise to ease his transition back into the team. However, his inconsistent display for Delhi Capitals underlines the need for him to find his rhythm once again.
Delhi, on the other hand, have moved on from one of their biggest pace-bowling investments and acquired Ansari at a significantly lower contract value. His IPL debut was encouraging, but he will need to prove his worth if he is to take on a greater role for the franchise in the coming seasons.
Ultimately, the trade allows both players to reboot their IPL careers. Natarajan will look to prove his worth to a franchise that he has had considerable success with, while Ansari will look to use his change of scenery to propel him into a more prominent role. As preparations for IPL 2027 begin, the success of the trade will come down to whether Natarajan can pick up where he left off, and Ansari can deliver the performances that got him noticed in the first place.
