Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar wasn’t happy with the way the hosts batted in the fourth T20I against the West Indies on Wednesday. Shreyas Iyer‘s side lost the game by 24 runs while chasing a huge target of 248 runs. At one stage, the Men in Blue were scoring at a healthy rate before losing wickets at key junctures of the game.

Gavaskar, speaking after the end of the game on Wednesday in Hyderabad, told the host broadcasters, “The first thing this Indian side has to do better is chase well, and the batting unit has to show more responsibility. If that doesn’t happen, then the team won’t succeed.”

He added, “On a wicket like this, with the dew coming in, the team has to show dominance with the bat. That is becoming of a side that has won the T20 World Cup twice in a row, which was completely missing from this game.”

In the second match, which was played in Ranchi, the visiting side successfully chased down a mammoth total of 250 to win the game.

Apart from Sanju Samsonnone of the batters in the top order were able to put up a fight. The 31-year-old scored 56 runs and gave his side a flying start in the powerplay overs. The team collapsed once the wicketkeeper-batter was out, giving Keemo Paul his first wicket of the day.

Indian star hurt after team’s loss

Samson addressed the media after the game in Hyderabad and said that his personal form doesn’t matter if it doesn’t translate into a win. “It feels different to be on a losing side, actually feeling gutted at the moment. I wanted to be on the winning side with my contribution.”

“I enjoyed my batting today. When you are chasing such a massive total, there are no second thoughts, and the batters have to back their instincts. You have to back the power game, and that’s what I did, but I would have loved to be on the winning side.”

Samson will get a chance to fulfill his wish on Saturday when the two sides meet in the final game of the series. Bengaluru is likely to witness another run-scoring fest on a wicket which is known to be a batting paradise.
