Indian domestic cricket witnessed a remarkable moment as Mizoram batter Chinmay Sutar produced a record-breaking performance in the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 season. The 29-year-old right-hander became only the second batter in the tournament’s history to reach the 400-run mark in a single innings, finishing unbeaten on 400 against Nagaland in a Plate League encounter at Sovima. His extraordinary knock has put him among the most notable performers in the history of India’s premier domestic first-class competition.

Chinmay Sutar scripts history with unbeaten 400

Sutar achieved the incredible milestone in only his second first-class appearance, making his accomplishment even more impressive. He surpassed Prithvi Shaw‘s previous score of 379 to register the second-highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history.

The Mizoram batter was unbeaten on 392 at tea before moving closer to the landmark during the 155th over. He eventually reached 400 not out, bringing his memorable innings to a fitting conclusion as Mizoram declared at 581/9.

However, the record books could have looked even different had Sutar managed a few more runs. The all-time highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history remains with BB Nimbalkarwho scored an unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar during the 1948-49 season. Sutar’s achievement underlined his ability to convert a promising innings into a truly historic performance, especially considering his limited experience at the first-class level.

Historic last-wicket partnership adds to Mizoram’s total

Sutar’s marathon innings was also supported by an extraordinary contribution from Lalrempunia Chhakchhuak. The pair stitched together an unbeaten 190-run partnership for the tenth wicket, helping Mizoram push their total to an imposing 581/9 before declaring.

Their stand ranks as the third-highest last-wicket partnership in Ranji Trophy history. The all-time record remains 233 runs, accumulated by Ajay Sharmawho scored 259, and Maninder Singhwho made 78, for Delhi against Mumbai during the 1991-92 season.

The partnership demonstrated how Mizoram continued to add valuable runs even after losing nine wickets. For Sutar, the lower-order resistance provided the opportunity to reach a landmark that few batters have managed in the long history of the competition.

From Mumbai cricket to a record-breaking Ranji Trophy debut

Sutar’s breakthrough has been building over recent months. Earlier in 2026, he represented Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy after impressing in local cricket. He also played a key role in helping MSC Maratha Royals defend their Mumbai T20 League title in June.

He finished that T20 competition with 212 runs in six innings at a strike rate close to 120, including consecutive half-centuries towards the end of the tournament. Before the 2026-27 domestic season began, Sutar secured a No Objection Certificate from the Mumbai Cricket Association and switched to Mizoram. He made an immediate impression in his Ranji Trophy debut against Manipur, scoring 35 and 99 despite Mizoram suffering a three-wicket defeat.

His second appearance has now brought a historic unbeaten quadruple century, transforming him into one of the biggest talking points in Indian domestic cricket. At 29, Sutar has delivered a performance that could prove pivotal in shaping the next chapter of his career.
