Ranji Trophy: Sachin Yadav, Karan Lamba miss double tons by six runs each after 338-run stand
JAIPUR: If Day One was about building a foundation, Day Two turned into a relentless exhibition of dominance by Sachin Yadav and Karan Lamba that ended in uncanny heartbreak. In a rare cricketing coincidence, both batters missed out on coveted double centuries, falling agonizingly six runs short of the landmark on identical scores of 194 in Rajasthan 's Group ‘D’ Ranji Trophy fixture against Railways at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium here on Monday.
Resuming from the overnight score of 247/2, the Rajasthan duo continued to dictate terms before Sachin’s dismissal sparked a post-lunch collapse as the hosts eventually folded for 497 all out.
The final session belonged to the hosts’ bowlers. Debutant pacer Danish Bhambu impressed with his disciplined line and length, finding good support from Chetan Sharma and left-arm seamer Akash Singh.
On a pitch that was still playing well, the seam trio did an excellent job of squeezing the run flow. However, it was left-arm spinner Mohit Changra who provided the hosts with their first breakthrough, trapping opener Vivek Singh lbw.
At stumps, Railways were 46/1, trailing by 451 runs.
Earlier, Karan, playing his 11th First-Class game, completed his third Ranji hundred in no time, ensuring another long day for the Railways’ bowlers. The sheer scale of the dominance even sparked some tongue-in-cheek chatter in the visiting dressing room. With the scoreboard ticking away relentlessly, a few in their camp jokingly muttered, "Yeh kya pitch banwaya hai (what kind of a wicket has been readied)?"
Reflecting on the surface, Karan noted, "You rarely get wickets like this in domestic cricket. The pitch was favoring batting. I tried to stay put and play a long innings."
The morning session brought its own test when the new ball was introduced, making life tricky for the batters. Edges flew, but Railways were let down by poor fielding as a couple of catches went down. Weathering the storm, Sachin and Karan expertly defended and left the probing deliveries.
Once the early threat wore off, they unleashed their strokes. Sachin compiled his 194 off 358 balls with 22 fours and four sixes, while Karan matched him brick-for-brick with a 194 off 284 deliveries, laced with 19 fours and 2 sixes.
Having trained together for years at the Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Academy, the duo’s deep understanding was evident on the field as they shared a partnership of 338 runs.
"We know each other's strengths," Karan shared. "Our communication was very easy because we have played cricket together for years."
Together, their marathon alliance completely broke the back of the Railways attack. Sachin was eventually stumped, while Karan holed out at point. Admitting to the disappointment of missing the double ton, Karan said, "It was on my mind a little bit, but not too much," he added.
