South Africa captain Temba Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton put on a crucial 52 for the fifth wicket as the hosts recovered from a disastrous start on Day Two of the ICC World Test Championship clash in Gqeberha. South Africa had slumped to 40/4 before the pair steadied the innings and offered some resistance against Australia's disciplined bowling attack.
Matt Renshaw produced a spectacular catch at first slip to bring the curtailed day's play to a close, with South Africa losing three wickets for 77 runs in fewer than 30 overs. Persistent rain delayed the start by six hours, while the opening day had also been completely washed out, severely limiting the action in the match.
Scott Boland continued his excellent form, dismissing Aiden Markram and David Bedingham in consecutive deliveries on the rain-affected opening day. The pacer from Australia accounted for two wickets to finish with his best-ever figures against South Africa in Tests, restricting the hosts to a small total.
The fast bowler immediately sent Bavuma on his way, as the southpaw failed to deal with the first ball of the day, missing out on his outside edge. It was the same problem for debutant Marques Ackermann, who was greeted with a bouncer by Pat Cummins, and Boland followed up with another good-length delivery which resulted in an edge behind the keeper, collecting a well-timed 6 off 38 balls.
Matthew Breetzke, making his third Test appearance, looked to be settling nicely into the match, in his first first-class match since February. However, it was not to be for the left-hander, as he was beaten by a sharp angle from Mitchell Starc, and edged behind to Alex Carey for a duck.
Wiaan Mulder came to the crease alongside Bavuma as South Africa looked to restrict Australia to a small score before stumps, but Bavuma remained unbeaten on 41 as he had survived the early onslaught. The southpaw has batted through the innings and holds onto the hopes of South Africa as the Australians look to make further inroads in the final hour of the day's play.
Australia currently lead the series 1-0 following their emphatic 214-run victory in the opening Test in Durban.
