Delhi: For the Bangladesh cricket team, the start of the Tri-Series 2026 in UAE has been no less than a nightmare. First, the team had to face a shameful defeat by 99 runs against Zimbabwe and now due to slow over-rate, ICC has also imposed a heavy fine on that. The beginning of the captaincy was not at all good for Tauheed Hridoy, who was commanding the team in the absence of regular captain Liton Das.
The first match of the UAE ODI tri-series between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe was played at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Bangladesh lost in this match by 99 runs. Due to the injury of Liton Das, Tauheed Hridoy was given the captaincy of the team, but in his very first match the team had to face ICC action along with the defeat.
Actually, Bangladesh team could not complete its overs in the stipulated time during the match. According to ICC, even after taking into account the time allowance, the team was still one over behind. For this reason, match referee David Gilbert fined Bangladesh players 5 percent of the match fee.
According to the official website of the ICC, the Bangladesh team was found guilty under Article 2.22 of the code of conduct for players and support staff. This rule is to slow over-rate. Under this, a fine is imposed on the team for not completing the overs in the stipulated time.
ICC's International Match Referee Panel member David Gilbert took action in this matter. Along with on-field umpires Allahuddin Palekar and Izatullah Safi, third umpire Ahsan Raza also made allegations against Bangladesh.
Bangladesh's interim captain Tauhid Hridoy accepted the charge of slow over-rate and agreed to the punishment given by the match referee. After Hridoy admitted his mistake, there was no need for a formal hearing in the matter.
In this way, Hridoy had to face double disappointment in his very first match of captaincy. The team suffered a big defeat on the field and then had to pay a fine for slow over rate. Now they will have the challenge of boosting the morale of the players and performing better in the next match.
After the defeat against Zimbabwe, Bangladesh's eyes are now on the match against Afghanistan. In the UAE ODI Tri-Series, the team will face hosts Afghanistan at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, October 21.
In the absence of Liton Das, Hridoy will once again be seen captaining the team. This match is very important for Bangladesh. The team will not only have to learn from its mistakes, but will also have to bounce back by performing better in both batting and bowling. Now it has to be seen how Hridoy handles his team after the poor start of captaincy.
