Delhi: Veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who has been out of the Indian cricket team for a long time, has made it clear that he has not given up hope of making a comeback. Despite not getting a place in the team for the New Zealand tour, his courage remains intact. Shami now also has his eyes on the ODI World Cup to be held in 2027. He says that he is still at the best level of his fitness and bowling.

Hope of comeback still remains

Shami has not been able to be a part of the Indian team's plans since winning the ICC Champions Trophy played in Dubai in March 2025.

However, he is proving his ability by continuously performing well in domestic cricket. After Bengal's 60-run win against Services at Palam Ground in Delhi, he spoke openly about his future.

Shami said, “Why should I give up hope? It should always be there. One should not give up hope in any profession. You should always have a goal. If we are playing Ranji Trophy, the goal is to win the title for the state. I do not deny that I also have a goal.”

Full confidence in fitness and performance

Shami believes that instead of worrying about the future, it is important to focus on the present. He said, “I don't think that far ahead. No one knows what will happen in life. Just keep playing matches and keep improving yourself.”

He further said, “I always say that my focus should be on my bowling and fitness. I do not want to take pressure by thinking too much about the future.”

Answering the questions raised on his age and fitness, Shami said, “I am still in my best phase. There is no need to beat around the bush.”

Answers to questions raised on long spells

On the ability to bowl for a long time, Shami said, “How can someone sitting outside decide whether I can bowl long spells or not? It depends on the need of the team.” He said that the decision to bowl is based on the pitch, match situation and the captain's strategy.

Not disappointed by not getting selected

On not being selected for the New Zealand tour, Shami said, “It was not a matter of disappointment. My aim is to play as many matches as possible in the upcoming tournament. No one knows when someone will be needed.” He also described domestic cricket as useful for preparation for the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Big thing said about Bhuvneshwar Kumar

On Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return to the Indian team, Shami said, “Based on the kind of performance he has performed, he should have got a place in the team long ago.”

Expressing his attachment towards Bengal, Shami said, “This team has given me recognition, whenever I finish my career, I will do it with this team.” At present, his entire focus is on maintaining fitness and performing well continuously.
