In a match that will live on in cricket history, Sri Lanka created one of the most remarkable run chases in Men's One Day International (ODI) history. Sri Lanka defeated England by two wickets with one ball remaining in the third match of the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series 2026 at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Chasing down a huge target of 430, the Kusal Mendis-led side bettered the ODI record for the highest successful run chase as they moved past England's efforts with an equally emphatic display of character and determination.
The thrilling match saw a combined total of 859 runs, with England captain Harry Brook scoring a mind-blowing 202 off 116 balls, the fastest double century in ODI history, but Sri Lanka bettered his efforts with a stunning display of their own.
Sri Lanka's successful pursuit of 430 is right behind South Africa's legendary chase of 435 against Australia at Johannesburg in 2006, with young sensation Pavan Rathnayake leading the way with a sublime 130 while Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka both produced blistering innings of 97.
With eight runs needed in the final over, Sri Lanka lost two quick wickets to Josh Tongue before Janith Liyanage kept his cool and launched a six off the penultimate delivery to seal an astonishing victory.

England skipper Harry Brook produced a monumental batting display, reaching his double ton in just 114 balls. He finished with 202 off 116 deliveries (21 fours, 10 sixes) at an astonishing strike rate of 174.14.
Brook became the first England batsman to score a double century in men's ODIs. In doing so, he broke the previous fastest double-century record set by India's Shubman Gill (117 balls).

England's Onslaught: Supported by Brook's double century, Root chipped in with a steady 69 while Will Jacks accelerated the innings in the last hour before being run out for an unbeaten 66 from 30 balls as they posted a huge total of 429/4.
Sri Lanka's Collective Grit: In contrast to England's reliance on Brook, Sri Lankan batsmen came in a fifty-run partnership. Rathnayake (130), Fernando (97), Shanaka (97) and Liyanage (61) showed the character to chase down the total.
Highest National Record: The 430/8 is now Sri Lanka's highest ever ODI score, bettering their previous best of 411/8 set against India at Rajkot in 2009.
