New Zealand's preparations for the remainder of the T20I series against India have suffered a setback, with fast bowlers Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson set to undergo scans to determine the extent of their injuries. While Henry has been ruled out of the remaining matches, Ferguson will miss the third T20I in Wellington, leaving the visitors to reassess their pace-bowling options as they navigate a demanding white-ball schedule.
Head coach Rob Walter confirmed that the duo would undergo scans on Tuesday, with the team hoping for positive news ahead of the subsequent ODI and Test assignments.
Henry picked up the injury during Saturday's match, bowling just two overs before leaving the field with a tight calf, as described by captain Mitchell Santner. The pacer will remain in Christchurch before joining New Zealand's ODI squad in Auckland on November 2, two days before the first ODI.
Ferguson, meanwhile, was withdrawn from the field as a precautionary measure. He will sit out the third T20I but is expected to return for the final two matches of the series in Auckland and Hamilton.
"Those two are being assessed. They'll go for some scans on Tuesday after the public holiday. We'll have some more information as to where things stand. Obviously, like always, we're just hoping for the best. That'll allow for the quickest turnaround," Walter said in a video shared by New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on Sunday.
Walter also explained that New Zealand had planned to rotate their fast bowlers throughout the series to manage workloads and ensure they were prepared for the upcoming five-match ODI series and two-Test assignment.
As part of that strategy, Adam Milne missed the previous match, while Kyle Jamieson is set to feature in the third T20I before remaining in Wellington to represent Canterbury in a Ford Trophy match against Basin Reserve opposition at the Basin Reserve. Blair Tickner will join the squad for the final three T20Is, while Josh Clarkson is expected to come in for the last two matches. Matt Fisher will also join the team as cover for the Wellington T20I.
