Veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has divided opinions since his return to India’s T20I side. The 36-year-old has fared poorly in New Zealand with just a wicket from the three games played so far. His below-par returns with the ball have raised massive questions about his place in the team ahead of the fourth T20I against New Zealand on Friday.

Former India skipper Ajinkya Rahane has backed his former teammate and urged fans not to pass judgement. “We shouldn’t judge how Bhuvi has bowled so far. He is an experienced player and would surely be analysing his own performance,” Rahane said.

“The biggest story is his return to the Indian side. Even at the age of 36, he is motivated and dedicated to play, which is not easy. Kumar’s intent and body language have always been good when he was playing before, which is something the selectors may have noticed,” he added.

“Performances can vary. Sometimes a bowler may not find the rhythm, so that shouldn’t be the reason to judge him, and he can do better. We should all learn from Bhuvi and not give up. As a bowler, he has to show his efforts, and the results will come. Who knows? He may end up with a fifer in the next game. Things can change in an instant. He is a thinking cricketer and very confident as well.”

Mohammad Kaif supports Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Mohammad Kaif is also backing Bhuvneshwar Kumar. “Kumar is coming back after four years, so give him some time. It has been only two games. The sport has changed a lot since he last played for India. Everyone thinks that he will pick a wicket on the first ball of the game, but the game has changed.”

“Playing in the IPL and playing international cricket are two different things. Everyone felt that there would be good swing on offer in New Zealand, but it is evident that the conditions are favourable for batters, and he is making his return against a strong side.”
