When India take the field in the first of a crucial five-match ODI series against New Zealand on November 4, 2026, all eyes will be on two players who have shouldered the hopes of a cricket-mad nation for over a decade.
With the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup fast approaching, India's strategy relies on the experience, durability and destructive power of their veteran duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Touring the Southern Hemisphere will provide visiting batting crews with the ultimate test as they face tricky conditions such as grassy pitches, swinging conditions, and strong winds.
This tour will be an amazing chance for Rohit and Kohli to further perfect India's opening batting trio, coach a new set of players, and put their friendly personal rivalry to one side as they play against New Zealand.

Not many visiting batsmen have mastered New Zealand conditions like Virat Kohli, who has played 13 innings in ODIs for 596 runs at an average of 49.66.
He has scored one century and four half-centuries, including a brilliant 123 from 111 balls at Napier on January 19th 2014. Kohli played a flawless innings as he combined defensive and attacking play to score at a 91.41 strike rate. This tour built his reputation as he scored 78 at Hamilton and 62 at Auckland.
With this series (2026), he is now only 4 runs away from scoring 600 runs in ODIs against New Zealand.
Kohli's ability to score between the lines, turn singles into doubles and adjust his tempo will be key for India as they face New Zealand's disciplined pace bowling attack.
India's opening batsman, Rohit Sharma, has yet to fully conquer New Zealand. He has scored 437 runs from 14 ODIs at an average of 36.41.
Despite scoring four good half-centuries, he has not scored a century in New Zealand. His highest score was 87 at Mount Maunganui in January 2019, which was a match-winning innings as they won by 90 runs.
This series will be the perfect opportunity to change his story in New Zealand.
With only 63 runs to go, Rohit can achieve his 500-run mark before the series reaches its final stages. As an opener, his role in the powerplay will be crucial. He needs to get settled against the moving ball and take advantage of the field restrictions. If he gets into his rhythm quickly and plays with respect to the conditions, then he will give India the quick starts they need.

After the opening match in Auckland, the series will be played in Wellington, Hamilton, and Mount Maunganui. But Team India have a bigger goal on their minds, which is to assemble an ODI team that can win the World Cup in 2027.
As the early summer conditions in New Zealand can be tough to deal with, having experienced leaders such as Rohit and Kohli means young teams are well looked after.
