India scored 213 runs after batting first, which is their highest T20 total on Sri Lankan soil. Then the hosts were bundled out for 170 runs.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav had an eventful outing as well. He played a superb knock with the bat, scoring 58 runs in just 26 balls.
Surya hit 8 fours and 2 sixes in his scintillating knock, thus managing his 20th half-century in T20Is.
The Indian captain took apart the Lanka bowling attack and was the key behind India's mammoth total. He then continued his good deeds with a decent captaincy display. The 33-year-old marshalled his troops brilliantly and started his permanent stint on a winning note.
Suryakumar was awarded the Player of the Match, where he achieved a major milestone.
Suryakumar Yadav - Most T20 POTM among Active Players
India captain Suryakumar Yadav has now the most number of T20I Player of the Match awards among the active players.
The batter is also equalled in the all-time list with 16 POTM awards, level with another India legend Virat Kohli.
Surya has equalled Kohli's tally with 56 less matches though. The current India captain has been awarded as the player of a T20I match 16 times in just 69 matches, compared to Kohli's 125 encounters.
Among the active players, Zimbabwe star Sikandar Raza is the next in the queue with 15 POTM awards.
Suryakumar Yadav now has a huge opportunity to become the undisputed leader in the T20 format Player of the Match winners list. As India take on the Lankans on Sunday, it will be an opportunity for the Mumbai-born to get past Kohli in the prestigious list and sit atop the list.
