Team India’s pacers had a brilliant day in the first ODI against New Zealand at Eden Park on Wednesday (November 4). The hosts were dismissed for 185 in 40.2 overs, with Arshdeep Singh taking four wickets. He was supported by Gurnoor Brar and Anshul Kamboj, who dismissed three and two batters respectively in the first innings. Shubman Gill won the toss and invited the Kiwis to bat first. His decision was backed by the speedsters on a bowling-friendly surface.
Will Young was the first one to depart, with Arshdeep taking his first scalp. He managed just 9 runs. The number three batter Henry Nicholls didn’t do any damage as he departed after contributing 9 runs, with Singh taking his second scalp of the day. Tim Seifert (38) and Daryl Mitchell (28) were keeping the scoreboard ticking before the former was undone by Gurnoor Brar.
Brar then took a stunning one-handed catch of Tom Latham (3), with the Black Caps tottering at 84/4. Mitchell and Glenn Phillips tried to add runs to the total, but confusion resulted in the run-out of the former, with Rohit Sharma producing a brilliant piece of fielding and KL Rahul doing the remaining work.
Mitchell Santner (1) and Nathan Smith failed to deal with the brilliance of Kamboj as the Indian pacer dismissed the two. Virat Kohli took a stunning catch of Smith to help Kamboj add a scalp to his bowling figures.
When Kyle Jamieson (1) and Phillips (30) were sent back by Arshdeep, it seemed the home team would be dismissed below the 150-run mark.
However, the last pair of Blair Tickner and Jacob Duffy added 39 runs to keep their team in the contest.
Ticker amassed 34 runs off 23 balls, including 4 sixes and 1 four. On the other hand, Duffy managed 15 off 21, including three boundaries.
