Preparations for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 mini-auction are gathering momentum, with franchises expected to finalise their retention and release lists by November 17. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could also make a few changes to their squad as they look to build a stronger combination for the upcoming season.
The five-time champions have several options across their bowling department, but not every player has managed to establish a regular place in the playing XI. With the mini-auction offering an opportunity to address specific weaknesses, the management could consider releasing a few existing players to create room for fresh additions.
Some decisions could be influenced by limited opportunities, while others might come down to performance, availability and financial flexibility. Let’s take a look at three players CSK could potentially release ahead of the IPL 2027 mini-auction.
1. Shreyas Gopal (₹30 Lakh)
Reason: Limited opportunities and an overcrowded spin department
Shreyas Gopal could be one of the players CSK consider releasing ahead of the upcoming mini-auction. The leg-spinner was acquired for ₹30 lakh but struggled to find a place in the team’s preferred combination during IPL 2026. At 32, he also faces stiff competition from several younger and more prominent options in the squad.
CSK have Noor Ahmed and Akeal Hosein as their frontline spin options, while the franchise also invested ₹14.2 crore in young all-rounder Prashant Veer.
With these players offering different spin-bowling options, Gopal could find it difficult to secure regular opportunities in the upcoming season.Possible strategy: Create a domestic squad spot for another player
Releasing Gopal would not generate significant savings, given his modest price tag. However, it would free up a domestic squad position that CSK could use to bring in a younger spinner or a bowling all-rounder. The franchise could also look for a domestic fast-bowling option who offers greater flexibility across different match situations.
Considering the competition within their spin department, parting ways with Gopal could be a practical squad-management decision.2. Rahul Chahar (₹5.20 Crore)

Reason: Underwhelming returns on a significant investment
Rahul Chahar could be another candidate for release after failing to establish himself as a dependable frontline option.
CSK spent ₹5.20 crore to acquire the leg-spinner, expecting him to strengthen their Indian bowling department and provide regular breakthroughs in the middle overs. However, his performances did not consistently justify the investment, and he struggled to cement a guaranteed place in the playing XI. With Noor Ahmad already offering a specialist wrist-spin option, CSK could reconsider whether retaining another expensive leg-spinner is the best use of their available purse.
Possible strategy: Free up funds to strengthen the pace attack
Releasing Chahar would immediately give CSK an additional ₹5.20 crore to work with at the mini-auction. The management could use that amount to address one of the team’s more pressing requirements, particularly the need for a dependable death-over specialist. The change in the coaching setup under Zaheer Khan could also influence the franchise’s approach to squad building.
3. Matt Henry (₹2 Crore)

Reason: Overseas slot crunch and underwhelming returns
Matt Henry could be another overseas player CSK consider releasing ahead of the IPL 2027 mini-auction. The New Zealand fast bowler featured in three matches during IPL 2026, picking up just two wickets while conceding runs at an expensive economy rate of 13.00. His returns were not particularly encouraging for a specialist overseas pacer.
CSK have also strengthened their overseas options by bringing in Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards through the trade market. With several international players already part of the squad, the franchise will need to manage its overseas combination carefully, as each team can have a maximum of eight overseas players in its squad.
Possible strategy: Free up an overseas spot for a better-suited option
Releasing Henry would open up an overseas squad position and allow CSK to explore other international bowling options at the mini-auction. The management could look for a pacer with better T20 numbers or someone who offers greater value in the death overs. Considering Henry’s limited impact in the previous season and the arrival of two overseas players, CSK could decide that his spot is better utilised elsewhere.
