Indian skipper Shubman Gill won the toss for the second game in succession and opted to field first. The game was reduced to 47 overs per side after rain had delayed the start in Wellington. Both teams fielded unchanged sides.
India’s fielding, which was lauded in Auckland, faced its first blemish on the second ball of the 17th over. Daryl Mitchell was frustrated with the tight lines and lengths bowled by the visiting bowlers and decided to play an aggressive shot.
The 35-year-old tried to hit the ball past the leg side but got a leading edge, and the ball was in the air for a long time. Gill, who was fielding at mid-off, got under the ball, with the batter ready to return to the dressing room. Much to everyone’s shock, the Indian captain dropped the catch.
Even wicketkeeper KL Rahulcouldn’t believe that Gill couldn’t complete the catch, with the team members starting to celebrate the wicket. Mitchell was batting on 21 off 35 deliveries.
The 30-year-old Auqib Nabiwho went wicketless in the last game, struck the first blow when he Tim Seifert was caught by Anshul Kamboj. His next scalp was Will Young, who edged the ball behind, and Rahul took a fantastic catch.
Kamboj got his first wicket of the day when Henry Nicholls chopped the ball back onto his stumps. The batter had survived on the previous ball, when the edge trickled away for four.
Meanwhile, Fan slammed Gill for dropping the catch.
