India's 2020-21 tour of Australia is etched in the memories of cricket fans for the fightback the team showed despite losing the first Test by eight wickets after getting 36 all-out in the second innings of the first Test.
Virat Kohli left for India after the first Test to attend the birth of her first child, and the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Hanuma Vihari, Ravichandran Ashwin, T Natarajan and Jasprit Bumrah suffered injuries at different stages of the five-match series. However, an undeterred India cricket team under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane fought valiantly to win the series 2-1.
The fourth and final Test of the series saw India hand Australia their first defeat in Brisbane after 32 years. The stunning fightback from India and their second consecutive Test series win in Australia did not come easy. At the time when Covid-19 was at its peak, there were a fair share of controversies on and off the field. While speaking at IISM Orientation Day 2024, Shardul Thakur - a member of that squad which scripted history down under - has revealed that the Indian team was treated horribly ever since they landed in Australia for the long tour. "The way they treated us was very horrible," said Thakur as he recalled the tour.
"For four or five days, there would be no housekeeping service in the hotel. If you wanted to change the bedsheets, you would have to walk up five floors when you're tired and come change it," he added. "Going from Sydney to Brisbane, we also heard the lady governor of Queensland saying that if Indians don't want to come then they shouldn't.
We don't want to host them or we are not happy hosting them. There were a lot of negative things being said about us to put us under pressure." That man was absolutely lying: Shardul Thakur blasts Tim Paine The all-rounder also slammed then Australia captain Tim Paine for lying to the media to shield the image of his team. Shardul Thakur stated that the Indian team did not even look at Australian players after beating them comprehensively in their own den. "I heard some interview from Tim Paine. That man was absolutely lying, he was just saving himself by making up things in the media, and covering up that 'we didn't put any pressure on Indian team and gave them whatever they wanted'.
But I know the truth." said Thakur. "Virat (Kohli) had left - and Ajinkya Rahane and Ravi Shastri were regularly fighting with Cricket Australia to give us what we wanted" he added. "First time we did not even look at Australians after winning. We said just go back and sit in your dressing room In the final Test match in Brisbane, Shardul Thakur picked three wickets in the first innings, and then scored 67 crucial runs with the bat to help India finish their first innings at 336 in reply to Australia's 369.
In the second innings as well, the Mumbai cricketer picked the crucial wicket of Cameron Green.
