Duleep Trophy: The BCCI is giving a growing importance to domestic cricket, and most of the India stars are expected to feature in the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024 season.
  Reports have suggested that even Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been given a choice to feature in the elite red-ball tournament in which best players from the four zones are picked. Even though the chances of their participation are dim, the involvement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will give a massive boost to Indian domestic cricket.
The trend of international stars ignoring domestic matches despite not being in the India squad has become a trend over the years. BCCI's crackdown on players not making themselves available for domestic matches of their zone and state teams is a welcome move. The regular participation of available international stars will also motivate the youngsters more aware about the structure and relevance of Indian domestic cricket. Further, It will ensure the next Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami comes out of a proper ecosystem.
The emergence of IPL has cast a threat on longer formats. BCCI's move to ask icons of Indian cricket to play domestic matches will help the T20 generation learn the importance of first-class and List-A cricket. In the article, let's have a look at the last domestic outings of India's Test regulars.
  • Virat Kohli: November 2012
Kohli's last appearance in domestic cricket was 12 years ago in 2012 during a Ranji Trophy match between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. He scored 14 and 43 in the two innings, and was dismissed by Bhuvneshwar Kumar on both occasions.
  • Rohit Sharma: September 2016
The Indian Test team captain last played a domestic game as India Blue and India Red locked horns in Duleep Trophy 2016.
He played for India Blue under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir, and scored 30 while batting at four in first innings, and unbeaten 32 at number three in second innings. The 37-year-old last represented Mumbai in November 2015. He scored 113 off 140 in the first innings. Shreyas Iyer also smashed a hundred in the match.
  • Jasprit Bumrah: January 2017
Bumrah, who made his first-class debut for Gujarat in 2013, last played a domestic red-ball match in January 2017 against Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy.
He registered his second-best figures in first-class cricket of 6/29 in the match.
  • KL Rahul: February 2020
The India wicketkeeper-batter featured in the Ranji Trophy semi-final for Karnataka back in February 2020. He scored 26 in the first innings against Bengal and was dismissed for a duck in his second outing.
  • Mohammed Shami: November 2018
Shami is undergoing recovery, and aiming to make a comeback with the Bangladesh Tests.
Duleep Trophy 2024 outing can be an opportunity to Test his fitness. His last domestic red-ball cricket outing was in November 2018 when Bengal took on Kerala in November 2018. He picked the wickets of Sanju Samson, Sachin Baby and Arun Karthik.
  • Mohammed Siraj - February 2020
Siraj, who now plays for India in all the three formats, played for Hyderabad against Vidarbha in a Ranji Trophy match in February 2020. He picked two wickets in the match.
  • Ravindra Jadeja - January 2023
Ravindra Jadeja captained Saurashtra against Tamil Nadu in January 2023. He was making a comeback from injury, and picked eight wickets including a 7-seven wicket haul in the second innings. He scored 40 runs with the bat.
  • Ravichandran Ashwin - January 2020 in a Ranji Trophy match between Tamil Nadu and Railways
