Steve Smith has sights on further glory in his illustrious career. The Australian has been a fantastic servant of his country, but wants a special achievement before he bids adieu to his cricket journey.
Smith has not dismissed the idea of aiming for a spot in Australia's T20 team for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. He believes he might continue playing T20 cricket longer than other formats, though he has no immediate retirement plans. Smith recently signed a three-year contract with Sydney Sixers in the BBL, ensuring his professional cricket career extends until at least 2026-27.
However, to realistically consider the Olympics, he would need to re-establish himself in Australia's T20 squad after being left out of this year's T20 World Cup. "I could still be playing T20 cricket in four years, so you never know. It's a format I can see myself playing probably for a lot longer than some of the others, especially with the franchise stuff around the world. I've signed on here for three years so it's only another year after that.
It would be cool to be part of an Olympics," Smith was quoted as saying by ESPN Cricinfo. For now, Smith is focused on enjoying his game without any specific plans for retirement. He is looking forward to the upcoming summer and remains relaxed about his future in international cricket. The immediate priority for Smith is Australia's international fixtures. He will participate in ODIs in England next month before facing India in a five-match Test series. This will be the first time since 1991-92 that Australia and India play a five-Test series against each other. "You can't really hide in a five-Test series like you probably can in a two-match series for instance.
If someone gets the wood on you, it can be hard coming back from that. It's going to be a wonderful series," he added.
