Former India player Dinesh Karthik has snubbed Yashasvi Jaiswal from the probable XI in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. India, having clinched the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Rohit Sharma's leadership, now sets its sights on the Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to be played in Pakistan.
With limited time remaining, selectors are keen to finalise the squad. Yashasvi Jaiswal's recent performances in Test cricket and T20Is have made him a strong contender for inclusion. But as per Dinesh Karthik, Yashasvi Jaiswal should be considered as a backup opener rather than being part of the Playing XI.
The wicketkeeper-batter thinks Shubman Gill will be a better partner of Rohit Sharma in the lineup. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill: A Strong Opening Pair Karthik expressed his views on Cricbuzz, stating, "Rohit and Shubman is a good combination. Jaiswal can be included as a backup opener and will get a chance if Gill fails to perform. India have a very solid middle order as well." Shubman Gill has recently been appointed as India's vice-captain in white-ball cricket, surpassing Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul for the role. India haven't played a lot of 50-over matches since the ICC World Cup last year.
The team is set to play three more ODIs before the Champions Trophy. Karthik also mentioned that with only three matches left before the Champions Trophy, there won't be much experimentation with the opening pair. "They are going to play another three games before the Champions Trophy. I am confident that it is going to be Rohit and Shubman opening in the tournament," he added. If Jaiswal is considered as a backup, it may deny India a left-right opening combination.
The young batter from Mumbai has proven to be a top-class player and may warrant opportunities ahead of the selection for the Champions Trophy.
