Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews has slammed the umpires for changing the ball in their second innings in the first Test against England in Manchester. After conceding a 122-run lead in the first innings, the Lankans were 146/4 in 41 overs from a dreadful 1/2 on Day 3.

Mathews scored 59 while Kamindu Mendis was on 33 when the ball change was ordered. The change benefited England as they took two wickets. Speaking to Sky Sports, Mathews said:

“England were running out of Ideas and umpires decided to change the ball.

We were informed that old balls were not available. It changed the course of the game. We worked hard to remove the shine but the ball was changed and the game went in their favour.”

However, Kamindu Mendis accumulated 113. On the other hand, Dinesh Chandimal managed 79 to post 326. England completed the chase of 205 with five wickets in hand.

Mathews continued to register his displeasure.

“It could be unfair for all the batters because their efforts to get rid of the shine go in vain. We were batting comfortably but the change helped England.

I am not blaming them but the rules should be followed when the umpires go for ball change.

“It was disadvantageous for the set batters. We were comfortable and it changed the momentum of the match.”
