There is still time for the announcement of Team India for the Test series against Bangladesh next month. Before that, some players have a chance to present their claim, out of which two stalwarts have failed in the first test. Mumbai's star batsman Shreyas Iyer, who was participating in the Buchi Babu tournament to prepare for the Test series, failed miserably. Suryakumar Yadav, who was trying to make a comeback in the Test team, also failed to score big. Apart from these two batsmen, the rest of the Mumbai batsmen also failed and the team lost 8 wickets for just 181 runs in the first innings.
Mumbai and TNCA-XI are facing each other in this match which started on 27th August in Coimbatore. TNCA-11 batted first and scored 379 runs in the first innings. In response, Mumbai came out to bat in their first innings on Wednesday but except opener Divyansh Saxena, no batsman could show his strength. TNCA captain R Sai Kishore trapped the Mumbai batsmen in his spin web in such a way that there was a fall of wickets in no time and by the end of the day's play, only 181 runs were scored after losing 8 wickets.
Most eyes were on star batsman Shreyas Iyer, who is a strong contender to make it to the Test team.
Shreyas, who came to bat at number three, was a complete flop and returned to the pavilion within just 3 balls. He could score only 2 runs and fell prey to left-arm spinner Sai Kishore. After him, Surya came to the crease and started batting fast as soon as he came in his own style. There was a partnership of 40 runs between him and Divyansh, out of which 30 runs were Surya's. Surya had a good chance to save Mumbai stuck in a difficult situation and present his claim but he also lost his senses and like Shreyas, returned to the pavilion on the ball of left-arm spinner Ajit Ram. Surya played an innings of 30 runs in 38 balls. Apart from him, young batsman Mushir Khan could also score only 16 runs.Although this was just the first innings and in this match he will get a chance to bat for the second time. Also, in the coming days, he will be seen playing in the Duleep Trophy as well. That is, he still has enough chance to impress the selection committee but his failure in this small test is worrying. The reason for this is losing wickets against spinners.
Shreyas is considered one of the best batsmen against spinners in the current Indian team but here he was ineffective. In the Test series too, Bangladeshi spinners will pose the biggest challenge, so this failure also weakens his case. As far as Surya is concerned, the chances of this star batsman getting a place in the team after playing only his debut Test match are very less at the moment but his desire to return to the team will also not be fulfilled with such a performance.
