On Monday, September 2, Nitesh Kumar defeated Great Britain's Daniel Bethell 2-1 in the men's singles SL3 final at the La Chapelle Arena Court 1 in Paris to script history for India, winning the gold medal.
Interestingly, this was Nitesh's first win over Bethell in 10 meetings between them.
Though Nitesh clinched the first game by 21-14, he lost it to his opponent by 18-21.
However, he made a strong comeback in the last game, bagging the gold medal on his Paralympic debut.
Earlier, Nitesh defeated Japan's Daisuke Fujihara in the semi-final clash by 21-16, 21-12 to make it to the men's singles SL3 summit clash.
Nitesh Kumar's career summary
Nitesh was born in Rajasthan and currently resides in Haryana. A train accident in 2009 caused him to lose his leg, bedridden for a lot of months. During his IIT days, he was inspired by para-shuttler Pramod Bhagat and later he took up the sport on a competitive level.
In 2016, he initiated his professional badminton journey at the nationals in Faridabad, securing a bronze medal.
Later in 2017, he bagged the Irish Para-Badminton International title. In 2022, at the BWF Para-Badminton World Championships, he bagged a silver medal, defeating Bhagat.
At the Asian Para Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, he secured three medals, including a gold medal in the men's doubles event, a silver in singles, and a bronze in the mixed doubles event.
