The 26-year-old has also been named in the India B squad for the second round matches in the ongoing Duleep Trophy 2024. The match will be played from September 12 to September 15, and the Mumbai batter will easily be able to join the India squad for the first Test on time.
However, the senior batter looks all set to walk straight into India playing eleven.
He featured in the first Test of the five-Test home series against England earlier this year, but was ruled out of the remaining games due to injury. Sarfaraz Khan made the most of the opportunity in the absence of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer in the middle-order, and scored 200 runs in three matches at an average of 50, and a strike rate of 79.36.
Former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth has sympathised with Sarfaraz Khan, but added that such instances happen in Test cricket when a senior player comes back in the squad to replace an in-form youngster.
He also cited the example of Rishabh Pant, who is certain to replace young Dhruv Jurel, on his Test comeback after a gap of 21 months.
"Honestly, I feel bad for Sarfaraz Khan. But, this happens, at times, in Test cricket. You would have been playing well but when a big player returns, you will have to lose your place. Take for instance, Rishabh Pant is returning because of which Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan are losing their places. KL Rahul is coming in," Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
"At the back of the mind, they are also keeping the Australia series.
New Zealand are also coming. KL Rahul has performed well overseas, in Australia he has done well," added Srikkanth.
KL Rahul and Sarfaraz Khan played against each other in the Duleep Trophy 2024 first-round matches. KL Rahul scored 37 (111), and 57 (121) across the two innings. He was India A's highest run-scorer in both innings. On the other hand, Sarfaraz Khan scored 9 in the first innings, but scored 46 off 36 balls in the second innings. His 72-run partnership off 56 balls, took the match completely away from India A.
